B Proactive With Your Brain Health-Vitamin B Is the Key

As we age, our brains accrue more and more stress. The rigors of life can slow our minds and thinking ability down while also causing problems with memory. Yes, our age plays a role on cognitive function, but we could also be deficient in essential vitamins, like Vitamin B.

A lack of Vitamin B in your diet can come at a hefty price. Symptoms include moodiness, trouble sleeping, a mental haze, and lack of energy. None of these are good, and can disrupt anyone’s day or even way of life.  The scary thing is that deficiencies in Vitamin B are not just limited to the elderly. Anyone can be deficient at any age. LifeGuard Against a Bad Diet

If you watch the news at all these days, you are bound to create a negative world view at some point. The featured stories almost always include significant acts of violence, unethical decisions, and other malicious happenings. What people may not realize, is that bad behavior could be related to a bad diet.

Essential Mineral ZincIn a recent study/report back in 2013, Sylvia Onusic, PhD, CNS, LDN, asserts that video games, media content, and poor home conditions can contribute to violent behavior, but many people are malnourished and thus, their brains are not functioning properly. In her article, “Violent Behavior: A Solution in Plain Sight,” she argues that deficiencies in zinc and Vitamins A, D, K, B6, B3, B12, and B1 can cause violent tendencies and mental issues in many Americans. Onusic points out that a lack of zinc has been attributed to angry and aggressive acts of violence. If a lack of these ingredients in a person’s diet can cause them to have aggressive tendencies, then educating people about these risks is important.

Not only do deficiencies in these vitamins lead to potentially hostile actions, they can also lead to brain injuries. Foods are packed with chemicals for them to last longer or taste certain ways, but these can be harmful. Loading your brain with so many foreign chemicals can alter your mind, and not for the better. Onusic suggests Americans get back to eating more nutrient-rich food if we hope to curb the rise in violence. Yes there are other factors involved with violent behavior, but if someone’s diet plays a role in these situations, then getting back to the basics of eating more nutritious food should be strongly encouraged. One way to ensure you’re getting the right amount of nutrients and vitamins is use supplements in addition to a healthy diet.

Here at Life Priority, we offer many products that can help with a healthier diet, but no product is more valuable than LifeGuard. One-Per-Meal LifeGuard is a multivitamin supplement that contains 25 essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. Supplements and Stress – The value of Omega3 and Phosphatidlyserine on helping to reduce stress.

One of the more potent dietary supplements for combating the effects of stress is omega-3 fat. Increasing omega-3 fats in the diet, especially docosahexanoic acid and phosphatidylserine can reduce stress hormone levels in both animals and humans. Supplementation with a specific omega-3 fats, phosphatidylserine has been shown to reduce a number of stress-related hormones such as adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol in both animals and humans.

Studies have shown that taking phosphatidylserine after a physically stressful event, such as long-distance running, weightlifting or competitive cycling, can reduce the usual increasing cortisol levels, reduce muscle soreness and accelerate recovery. Phosphatidylserine also can reduce the stress from demanding mental and emotional activities. Since phosphatidylserine levels decrease in the brain as we age, studies in the elderly have shown that phosphatidylserine supplementation can improve both long-term and short-term memory, cognition and logical thinking.

However, these results do not seem to be consistently reproducible. Some studies show a significant benefit, and other studies demonstrate either limited benefit or no benefit whatsoever. The question is “why are these results so different?” The answer may be that those participants who respond poorly to stress may benefit the most from phosphatidylserine. A study inadvertently composed of participants who have a difficult time handling stress, may skew the results toward a positive outcome. In contrast, if the study is composed of individuals who handle stress more easily, the results would probably trend toward no benefit.

One recent German medical study looked at the effect of supplementation with phosphatidylserine on subgroups of participants undergoing a mentally stressful test. In this study, participants were divided into two basic groups, one group receiving phosphatidylserine and the other group receiving a placebo. The patients then underwent psychologically stressful testing. A number of psychological and physiological stress parameters were followed throughout the duration of the study. The results were then stratified into people who respond strongly to stress and those who don’t respond very strongly to stress.

The results were interesting. For individuals who do not respond very strongly to stress, phosphatidylserine supplementation did not seem to be of benefit. In contrast, individuals who responded strongly to stress, saw significantly reduced stress measures after taking phosphatidylserine. In this subgroup, phosphatidylserine was very beneficial.  Phosphatidylserine is derived from soy and is generally recognized as safe by the FDA. The best dietary sources of phosphatidylserine are in seafood rarely found in the American diet: mackerel, herring and eel. For those who are under chronic stress (and are feeling the effects), phosphatidylserine supplementation seems to be to be a reasonable option. During stressful times of the year, I use it myself.

Can a Walk a Day, Keeps the Doctor Away?

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Everyone should drink 8 cups of water per day. These are just two examples of health advice which is well known, but walking daily is another important one. Doctors and other healthcare professionals would like people to exercise for at least an hour every day, but a fair amount of people do not adhere to their suggestion. If exercising seems like too much, at least try walking, because walking is more important than you might think.

One recent study tested a little more than 2,000 men from Hawaii with ages ranging from 71-93 for 7 years. The study found that those men who walked approximately a quarter mile per day were twice as likely to develop dementia as those who walked more than two miles per day. Just think, two miles per day can have an enormous effect on one’s mental health. The brain needs to be stimulated, and walking every day can give your mind time to think and become healthier. Not to mention, walking can help people lose weight or possibly prevent weight gain.

In another study, researchers followed about 19,000 women (ages 70-81) for nine years. This study discovered that women who walked or exercised for at least 1.5 hours, did better on tests which challenged their attention and memory skills. Conversely, women who walked less than 40 minutes a week showed a decline in these categories. Walking greatly benefits cognitive skills and helps people lessen their chances of having a mental fall off so to say. Just like keeping your mind active with reading or writing or some other form of brain exercise, physical exercise also does wonders for the mind.

Of course with exercising and walking daily, comes the possibility of pain and discomfort. These are two factors which deter a good amount of people from continuing their workout routine, but pain and discomfort are necessary for growth. Muscles become sore, only to become stronger, but sometimes bones and joints also develop ailments. Joint Decision could be a useful aid with walking daily, because Joint Decision might help keep you on your feet and on the go. Glucosamine is one of the main ingredients in Joint Decision and it can help with the repair and production of cartilage which is necessary for cushioning between joints to keep them feeling healthy and strong. Check out more about Joint Decision on our website (lifepriority.com) to see if it could be right for you in your workout and walking endeavors.

The most important thing is to stay active and exercise on a regular basis, preferably daily, but going to the gym or lifting weights may not be your thing, so try walking and listening to some of your favorite music while doing so. You could also think through difficult decisions or situations in your life while you’re walking the trail or the neighborhood. Walking can be extremely therapeutic and good for your overall health, so start walking today and see for yourself!

Life Priority: A Teacher’s Assistant To Help Eliminate Mental Fatigue

A teacher’s testimonial from valued Life Priority customer, Leigh Sanders. “I love teaching, and the best teacher’s aide I’ve ever had are my Life Priority Supplements.”

My husband and I have been using Life Priority supplements for over 10 years.  We were small business owners for 15 years and now Stan works as a consultant and I am an elementary school teacher, which is very exhausting.  Don’t believe it when your hear someone say teachers only work 8-4, 5 days a week, 9 months out of the year because they are very wrong!  Most of us put in anywhere from 50-60 hours per week August through May (not to mention the planning we do during the summer.)

I keep a mixture of LIFT and Muscle Memory at school and drink it Life Priority Lift Powderthroughout the day, especially when I need that afternoon pick-me-up and helps me eliminate my mental fatigue.  Instead of reaching for a soda or caffeinated beverage, I drink my LIFT/MM mixture or take the LIFT caps.

I play tennis, bike, and walk for exercise, so my other favorite supplement is the Joint Decision.  Joint Decision keeps my knees and neck more flexible.  Stan travels quite a bit so he keeps a bottle of the LIFT Caps in his brief case since those are easy to travel with.

Four years ago, my youngest son Austin broke his foot, which required a plate and six screws for it to heal properly.  I loaded him up on 3-Way Calcium and Joint Decision and he recovered well ahead of schedule.  He is currently a baseball player in college and uses LIFT, Muscle Memory, and Joint Decision to keep him focused and healthy.

Stress less with Music

I need a personal assistant, as I always manage to pack my days from beginning to end with various different tasks, events and plans. Everything from work and working out to obligations with friends. Unfortunately, I do not have a personal assistant, and it’s not uncommon for me to overbook myself and spread myself too thin. Having several different things I’m passionate about, leaves me wanting to be everywhere doing everything at once! Now that It is the holiday season, I have to fit shopping and family parties into the mix, which makes things even more intense and exhausting!

So what do I do when I think I’m about to spin out of control or simply pass out? The answer lies embedded in so many of my memories. For as long as I can remember, I have always turned to music. When I was on the bus to an away basketball game, after a longMan on treadmill day of class and friends, I would put on my headphones to unwind. Humming to myself, eyes closed, I would listen to the calming tones of The Vines. My mind would instantly go from running in circles to standing still, and fully focused on the game.

When I leave the house in the morning, my mind is already running through all the different tasks that lie before me, and it’s not uncommon for me to forget things in the mix! But it has been proven that music can help your memory! Knowing this, I wrote a little song to help me remember the basics! I sing, “don’t forget your phone, keys or purse, because that is the worst”. That’s right, I have been known to forget my purse, but when you have so many distractions, things get left behind!

There have been several other times in my life that I have found a sweet comforting calm in the arms of a good song. One time in particular happened my senior year of college. I was wrapped up in classes, cheerleading, choir, church and friends, when I received a call from my sister. My mom had fallen very ill, and needed to be hospitalized. I rushed home from Iowa to be with her, and stay up with her in ICU overnight. As she screamed in pain, weaving in and out of sleep, I sang to her. I sang old church hymns and Jason Mraz songs, all of our favorites. As the sun came up, she finally fell asleep, right as I was losing my voice. To this day she doesn’t remember that night, as the medication and her condition at that time wiped her memory of those hours. As I left in the morning (since my sister was there to stay with her) the overnight nurses of the ICU thanked me for singing and bringing comfort to the other patience. I’m glad I was able to bring music to that place of high stress and tension, but I wasn’t singing for them. I was singing for myself. In the wake of senior year stress, and my mother’s illness, I was singing to myself to find calm in the hurricane of life. I don’t know if I would have made it through the night without those old familiar songs to ease the weight of stress and worry on my heart.

In the hustle of life, it’s easy to get lost in the comings and goings and all the things that seem so important. But none of those things are more important than your personal health.  as it has the power to take you back to the first time you heard that song and really felt what it means. A song can simply help you breathe.

When is the Best Time to Exercise?

Fit Women on Exercise BikesWhen is the Best Time to Exercise?

One of the most controversial subjects in the fitness world is what time of day is the best time to exercise. Scientists have been going back and forth on this for years.  It is still inconclusive.  That was also a very common question from my clients as a personal trainer. The answer I would give them was that it doesn’t matter.  I would rather see you work out at any time as long as you get it in.  It’s whatever time works for you and whatever time you will stick with.  For me personally, exercise tends to wire me and give me energy, therefore I am not able to work out at night.

For my body, morning exercise works best for me but I am also a morning person. If you are a night owl or work nights, then it may be better for you to work out at night.  I also know people who get a second wind at noon or on their lunch hour.  I personally feel my best and have the most energy to work out between the hours of 9:00am and 1:00pm.  If you only have time to work out at 5:30 in the morning and you think you can stick to this routine, then by all means please get in a routine at 5:30 in the morning!  At the end of the day, what matters is that you did something, even if it is only being able to squeeze in a 15 minute walk at 8:00pm after dinner. If you are trying to lose weight, science is still science and it comes down to calories in and calories out.  The bottom line is that it doesn’t really matter what time of day you exercise as long as you get it in somewhere and you do what you know you can stick to.

A couple of products that I love and use myself to get me motivated to exercise are the Lift and Muscle Memory from Life MuscleMemory_550x550Priority. The Lift can help you get in the mood to exercise if you are feeling a little unmotivated that day.  Also the Muscle Memory helps muscle recovery due to the Amino Acid L-Arginine.  I have found that these two products when used together, give me the best workouts and help my body recover for the next workout!

In the end, exercise should be fun and you should not dread it.  If this means that you need to wait until noon on your lunch hour to feel energetic to take a walk, then so be it.  At least you have done something and you are on your way to a healthier lifestyle!

New Year, New Attitude

A very important part of being happy — and healthy — is to maintain a positive attitude, no matter what your circumstances are. Remember Charles Swindoll, and his perception that attitude is a matter of choice.

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude… I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our attitudes.

If you could use a little help along the way, a Phenylalanine formulation might be just the thing to lift your spirits and support your positive attitude. Phenyalalanine may just be the Lift you need to cheer you up and support better mental health. It seems to improve mood in depressed patients. The brain is the most important master organ in your body, so exquisitely fine-tuned to perform innumerable tasks —among which is to make us feel happy.

Enter Phenylalanine. A natural approach is to use nutritional supplements, which many people prefer because they’re largely free of adverse side effects, and they’re less expensive, too. The amino acid phenylalanine has long been of interest because of its role in the production of dopamine and noradrenaline, two neurotransmitters that play key roles in the regulation of mood, especially with regard to our sense of well-being, i.e. our happiness. Significantly, deficiencies of these neurotransmitters in the brain are associated with depression. Many people feel it acts to help suppress stress eating and help to increase motivation and drive.

woman-positive-attitude-energy-iStock_000001925028Small

Lift  might help supply you with a boost of energy. Lift Caps are another convenient way to take your nutritional supplement that may support a positive mental attitude and a productive day.

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid — it must be obtained from outside sources because our bodies cannot synthesize it in appreciable amounts. It’s one of the 20 common amino acids found in dietary proteins that we obtain from plants and animals. (Babies, take note: breast milk is particularly rich in phenylalanine.) I personally use the Lift formulation to start each and every day.

As a small business owner, I get asked all the time what my secret weapon is to get it all done. Psst… It’s Lift.

Philosophy 101

Philosophy 101

As we grow older, and hence wiser, we slowly realize that:

Whether we wear a $300 or $30 watch – – – they both tell the same time.

Whether we carry a $300 or $30 wallet/handbag – – – the amount of money inside is the same.

Whether we drink a bottle of $300 or $30 or $3 wine – – – the hangover is the same.

Whether the house we live in is 300 or 3,000 or 30,000 sq. ft. – – – the loneliness is the same.

And we realize our true inner happiness does not come from the material things of this world.

Whether we fly first or economy class, if the plane goes down – – – we go down with it. Whether we fly first or economy class, if the plane reaches its destination – – -everyone arrives at the same time.

Therefore . . . we should realize that when we have mates, buddies and old friends, brothers and sisters, with whom we can chat, laugh, talk, sing, talk about north-south-east-west or heaven and earth — that is true happiness!

Six Undeniable Facts of Life

  1. Don’t educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy, so when they grow up they will know the value of things, not the price.
  2. Best wise words: “Eat your food as your medicines. Otherwise you have to eat medicines as your food.”
  3. The one who loves you will never leave you because, even if there are 100 reasons to give up, he or she will find one reason to hold on.
  4. There is a big difference between a human being and being human. Only a few folks really understand that.
  5. You are loved when you are born. You will be loved when you die. In between, you have to manage!
  6. If you just want to walk fast, walk alone; but, if you want to walk far, walk together!

Six Best Doctors in the World

  1. Sunlight
  2. Rest
  3. Exercise
  4. Diet
  5. Self Confidence
  6. Friends

And, finally: The nicest place to be is in someone’s thoughts, the safest place to be is in someone’s prayers, and the very best place to be is…in the hands of God.
