Be a Royal Blood Donor- Save a Life Today!

I have been donating blood on a regular basis since 2002. I made the decision to donate blood for the following reasons.Greg Royals 1985

  1. Blood is needed every 2 seconds.
  2. About one in seven people entering the hospital needs blood.
  3. Blood is always needed for treatment of accident victims, cancer patients, hemophiliacs and surgery patients.
  4. Blood cannot be manufactured or harvested.
  5. Only 37% of our country’s population is eligible to give blood, and less than 10% donate annually.
  6. If I do not need blood, at some point I will know a friend, neighbor, family member, or co-worker who needs a blood transfusion.

Your investment of time and your gift as a volunteer blood donor deliver the greatest possible return. Donating blood takes about one hour, including a mini-physical and health interview. Within about 10 days, your blood will have already reached someone in need. Where else can you volunteer one hour of time and save up to three lives?

When I donate, I visit one of the 6 local KC Area Community Blood Centers which is part of an independent, not-for-profit organization.  The Kansas City Royals and the Community Blood Centers are having the annual “Royals Week” blood drive this year from Monday, July 6 through Sunday, July 12. Schedule your blood donation today!

Please help the effort and schedule a visit to one of  your local Donor Centers. Donors can access the website at www.savealifenow.org to learn more about CBC and access Schedule Your Appointment Now to set up an appointment during that week.  Get in the Game!  Donate during July 6 to July 12th!

Thank you! Go Royals!

Do You Want a Real Lift for Mental Fatigue?

(Life Priority was formed in 1994 by owners, Greg and Michelle Pryor, to provide truthful, up-to-date information about dietary supplements and the supplement industry.  They also wanted to supply high-quality, research-based, health products to customers.  Greg and Michelle were retail customers of many of the products that are offered at Life Priority.)

Since 1991, Life Priority has been offering consumers high-quality, research-driven products. Many products are called Designer Food formulas and were created by Durk Pearson & Sandy Shaw for their own personal use.  Durk & Sandy co-authored the NY Times best-seller, Life Extension, A Practical Scientific Approach, written specifically for doctors.  In the past, most medical schools did not give doctors much information about how vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc. used in adequate amounts, could slow up the aging process, help improve memory, and speed up recovery after exercise or injury.

Durk & Sandy wanted to provide doctors with the research available at the time on how  certain nutrients could help people live a healthier lives, both mentally and physically.

At the time that Life Extension was published, the information was not available to doctors.  The information in the book has stood the test of time.

Several of the Life Priority Pearson & Shaw Designer Food formulas contain nutrients that the body use to make neurotransmitters.  Every thought and emotion in the brain is caused by the release of neurotransmitters.  In many cases, the modern-day diet does not provide enough of the nutrients necessary to make adequate amounts of neurotransmitters.  The Life Priority products, Lift and Lift Caps, contain specific nutrients found in food along with a small amount of caffeine, 80 mg per serving.  These specific nutrients may help the brain make and release noradrenaline, a neurotransmitter.

Those with low levels of noradrenaline generally have difficulty staying awake, concentrating, and paying attention to tasks.  When I used Lift for the first time in 1991, I knew that it worked because I felt bright-eyed and bushy-tailed within 30 minutes and it lasted for 4-6 hours!  It is, possibly, the healthiest and least expensive way to get “5 hour energy!”

It is important to realize that Lift does not need caffeine make it work.  The caffeine is added to simply help the brain release a little quicker.  The other nutrients in Lift and Lift Caps are what the body (brain) uses to make noradrenaline, not the caffeine.

The reason why I wrote the above information is to make you aware of what brain “energy” really is.  It is not simply caffeine!  Many caffeinated beverage do not contain enough nutrients to help your brain make more noradrenaline.  An over consumption of caffeine during the day, without replenishing the body with nutrients to make more noradrenaline, might cause a “crash” caused from excessive caffeine consumption.

The FDA suggests that a person does not consume more than 400mg of caffeine per day.

Life Priority - Eyes on Vitamin D

Eyes on D3

Thanks to recent research, the power of vitamin D3 is making headlines again. And, as the weather turns warmer, the timing couldn’t be more perfect to talk about the benefits of such an environment-related key to our health.

Life Priority - Eyes on Vitamin D

Also known as the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D3 is manufactured in the body’s skin when it is exposed to sunlight. To date, it has proven effective in preventing cancer, enhancing bone health, lowering blood pressure and decreasing depression. And now its anti-inflammatory properties are being highlighted through a recent study of aging mice.

In this study, a group of mice with age-associated visual impairments caused by retinal inflammation were given doses of vitamin D3 for a period of six weeks, while another group with the same condition was given a controlled placebo. During that time, the retinal inflammation of the mice receiving D3 injections decreased significantly compared to those receiving the placebo. In fact, the D3 treatments also appeared to positively affect chronic inflammation in other areas of the rodents’ bodies overall.

What does this mean? It means great news for everyone who is fighting to maintain their eyesight as they get older. Simply getting more vitamin D3 could be an easy way to keep your vision intact for as long as you are!

Unfortunately, vitamin D3 only helps if we get adequate amounts of it. With so much of our attention being focused on avoiding the sun and lowering our risk of skin cancer, most of us don’t get the amount of D3 we need in order to reap its benefits.

This summer, instead of avoiding the sun altogether, adopt a balanced approach to sunlight and enjoy the outdoors. You’ll not only boost your mood and lower your risk of various diseases, you’ll also increase your chances for improved eyesight. If opportunities for outdoor activity aren’t readily available for you, consider talking to your doctor about vitamin D3 supplementation. It could be just the thing you need to see clearly for years to come!

YOUR POSITIVE ATTITUDE CAN HELP YOU LIVE LONGER

Positive Attitude Good HealthCould laughter really be the best medicine? Continuing with our Four Pillars of Health, we wanted to look into how having a positive attitude and positive outlook on life can affect our health. Interestingly enough, these qualities are found to increase longevity in several cases.

A compelling study conducted on centenarians investigated the population’s outlook on life through an emotional screening survey. The surveys found that the centenarians all possessed similar optimistic emotional traits, drawing the conclusion that positive attitudes, lacking neurotic tendencies, lead to a longer life.

Being in a sad or depressive state can also take a toll on your immune system. Another study found that after taking a personality style evaluation and being exposed to a respiratory virus, participants who scored in the positive personality range became less likely to develop the virus symptoms.

Having a positive outlook on life can also reduce stress, anxiety and their effects. Stress has been linked to heart attacks and other coronary problems. By staying positive in every situation and learning not to sweat the small stuff, the risk for heart issues is decreased.

Along with positive outlook on life, being young and jovial at heart has also been linked to longevity. One study found that self-perceived age was associated with higher mortality. Individuals were interviewed and asked how old the felt versus how old they actually were. The majority of participants reported that they felt younger than their actual age. After reviewing these numbers against their health statuses, the study found that self-perceived age emulates appraisals of health, physical limitations, and well-being.

Feeling young at heart, having a positive attitude, and an overall positive outlook on life all affect your health and essentially, the longevity of your life. With so many things that are out of our control in this life, we have the choice to control our attitudes and how we react in all situations. Life is too short, so we should all make an effort to enjoy it and make it last as long as we can. Stay positive and young at heart, friends!

Why Our Bodies Need Vitamin D Supplementation

Sunlight Trees Horses Herding Horseback Cowboys

The year is 1817, void of our current-day electronics, processed foods, and 8+ hour desk job work days. The farming and agriculture industry reigns, where 90% of the population lives on a farm and produces their own food.

This lifestyle encouraged ample amounts of sunlight to be absorbed into the skin thus, producing Vitamin D for our bodies to use. In those times, Vitamin D deficiencies were not an issue like they are today.

Vitamin D is a unique vitamin in that our bodies do produce it, but as our habits change and we age, it becomes harder to trigger its production. Natural Vitamin D food sources are very limited and only include fish and egg yolks. Some foods can be fortified with Vitamin D, but natural sources are the best way to obtain the Vitamin.

This is where it becomes problematic for us today. We are already faced at a disadvantage with such a limited number of food sources where we can access Vitamin D. Couple that with the fact that our population hardly spends time outside in the natural sunlight like we did 200 years ago. We are hit with a double whammy where Vitamin D deficiencies seem inevitable.

Vitamin D is essential for our bone, cardiovascular, and neuromuscular health. It is for these reasons that we require Vitamin D supplementation. The recommended dietary allowance of Vitamin D for adults aged 51-70 years is 600 IU. For adults over 70 the amount increases to 800 IU (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services). With our modern lives that are mainly spent indoors, we simply cannot naturally produce these amounts resulting in us relying on supplementation to keep us healthy.

Make sure you are being proactive about your health and being intentional when it comes to obtaining Vitamin D and seeking out supplementation.

Be sure to speak with your health care professional before you start taking a Vitamin D supplement.
