Lifeguarding Women’s Health

Staying on top of all the latest healthy foods and diets is exhausting, and knowing all the latest news about vitamins is no different. Almost everyone can benefit from taking a supplement with calcium because most people don’t get as much as they need through their diets — 1,000 mg a day for adults, increasing to 1,200 mg after age 50.

What Consumers Need to Know About Vitamins

From “Everything You Need to Know About Vitamins” in Everyday Health:

Paul Thomas, EdD, RD, scientific consultant with the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements, notes that some vitamins become especially important at certain times in a person’s life. For example, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should be certain to get enough folate, or folic acid, a B-complex vitamin — 600 units a day, rather than 400. And as you age, you should probably take a daily supplement to get additional B12, he suggests.
“You don’t have to become an expert or learn all the intricacies of all the vitamins — because you can’t,” adds Dr. Thomas. There’s simply too much information to try to remember. What you need to do is eat a healthy diet, selecting recommended foods based on the USDA guidelines. Because few of us consistently eat a well-balanced diet, Thomas says taking an over-the-counter multivitamin, even a store brand, is a good idea. “It’s sort of like an insurance policy that covers all your bases,” he explains.

Insuring the Right Balance in Your Diet

Insuring your nutrition with a multivitamin could possibly be your summer’s lifeguard. We cannot possibly intake the proper amount of nutrients and vitamins from our daily diets so we need multivitamins to help protect our body, like a lifeguard protects and watches over you when you’re swimming.

Multivitamin One-Per-Meal LifeGuard might help when you’re drowningLifeGuard Daily Antioxidant Supplement in a bad diet. It was formulated by two of the top nutritional scientists in the world who wrote a bestselling book in 1978 about life extension. LifeGuard is packed full of 27 essential vitamins and nutrients that may strengthen the immune system and protect your body from free radical damage.

B Proactive With Your Brain Health-Vitamin B Is the Key

As we age, our brains accrue more and more stress. The rigors of life can slow our minds and thinking ability down while also causing problems with memory. Yes, our age plays a role on cognitive function, but we could also be deficient in essential vitamins, like Vitamin B.

A lack of Vitamin B in your diet can come at a hefty price. Symptoms include moodiness, trouble sleeping, a mental haze, and lack of energy. None of these are good, and can disrupt anyone’s day or even way of life.  The scary thing is that deficiencies in Vitamin B are not just limited to the elderly. Anyone can be deficient at any age. Vitamin B can be found in leafy greens, legumes and fruits.

Life Priority Lift PowderOf course incorporating more of those Vitamin B sufficient foods in your diet are important, but sometimes even that isn’t enough. Adding supplements to your diet can really help ensure you’re getting enough of the right vitamins and minerals for your body to be healthy.

Lift and Mind are two Life Priority products which include Vitamin B in their formulas. Both are designed with the intention to help give your brain and mind a mental boost and eliminate mental fatigue. Lift might MIND Brain Health Supplementhelp you feel less tired and more alert and energetic for the day ahead. Mind on the other hand, could possibly help with your memory, thinking and analyzing skills. These products just might be able to help you feel 20 years younger mentally and more rejuvenated. If you have any of the symptoms listed above, see if Lift and Mind can help your brain start feeling younger today.

LifeGuard Against a Bad Diet

If you watch the news at all these days, you are bound to create a negative world view at some point. The featured stories almost always include significant acts of violence, unethical decisions, and other malicious happenings. What people may not realize, is that bad behavior could be related to a bad diet.

Essential Mineral ZincIn a recent study/report back in 2013, Sylvia Onusic, PhD, CNS, LDN, asserts that video games, media content, and poor home conditions can contribute to violent behavior, but many people are malnourished and thus, their brains are not functioning properly. In her article, “Violent Behavior: A Solution in Plain Sight,” she argues that deficiencies in zinc and Vitamins A, D, K, B6, B3, B12, and B1 can cause violent tendencies and mental issues in many Americans. Onusic points out that a lack of zinc has been attributed to angry and aggressive acts of violence. If a lack of these ingredients in a person’s diet can cause them to have aggressive tendencies, then educating people about these risks is important.

Not only do deficiencies in these vitamins lead to potentially hostile actions, they can also lead to brain injuries. Foods are packed with chemicals for them to last longer or taste certain ways, but these can be harmful. Loading your brain with so many foreign chemicals can alter your mind, and not for the better. Onusic suggests Americans get back to eating more nutrient-rich food if we hope to curb the rise in violence. Yes there are other factors involved with violent behavior, but if someone’s diet plays a role in these situations, then getting back to the basics of eating more nutritious food should be strongly encouraged. One way to ensure you’re getting the right amount of nutrients and vitamins is use supplements in addition to a healthy diet.

Here at Life Priority, we offer many products that can help with a healthier diet, but no product is more valuable than LifeGuard. One-Per-Meal LifeGuard is a multivitamin supplement that contains 25 essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. You can take one capsule after every meal to potentially help strengthen your diet so your body might get the support it needs to function at its very best. For this product and other supplements that might be beneficial for you, visit our website at lifepriority.com and start your journey to a healthier you today.

Dietitian Carrie Mark-Why I started using Life Priority supplements..

As a dietitian I advise that you try and get all the nutrients you need through food, but realistically getting 100% of all required nutrients on a daily basis through food can be a challenge; since everyone’s lives are so busy, and hectic, and processed food is always just around the corner to choose. That’s why I started using Life Priority supplements. These products are not only made with the highest quality of ingredients but they have been proven to provide the nutrients they say they will.

Life Priority Lift Caps

One of my favorites is the Lift Caps. The Lift Caps not only provide you with all your B vitamins but they provide many other essential vitamins as well that give me the energy boost I need to get through my days of working, working out, and parenting. When I first received the sample I wasn’t sure about the product and I thought it would be much like other supplements that I have taken, and I wouldn’t notice a difference at all by taking them. But, I was quickly proven wrong with just one use.

I take the Lift Caps every day and every day I am amazed at the amount of energy they provide me. Before I started taking the Lift Caps I would catch myself not wanting to work on projects for work, work out, and I dreaded the after school routine of homework, lessons, practice and dinner. Now I don’t dread it at all, as I have the energy and mental stamina to get me from work, to the gym, to the after school routine with my kids.

I would recommend Lift Caps to anyone who is feeling like they just don’t have the energy. You will be surprised and amazed at the results and how much better you will feel after just one day of taking them.

Supplements and Stress – The value of Omega3 and Phosphatidlyserine on helping to reduce stress.

One of the more potent dietary supplements for combating the effects of stress is omega-3 fat. Increasing omega-3 fats in the diet, especially docosahexanoic acid and phosphatidylserine can reduce stress hormone levels in both animals and humans. Supplementation with a specific omega-3 fats, phosphatidylserine has been shown to reduce a number of stress-related hormones such as adrenocorticotropic hormone and cortisol in both animals and humans.

Studies have shown that taking phosphatidylserine after a physically stressful event, such as long-distance running, weightlifting or competitive cycling, can reduce the usual increasing cortisol levels, reduce muscle soreness and accelerate recovery. Phosphatidylserine also can reduce the stress from demanding mental and emotional activities. Since phosphatidylserine levels decrease in the brain as we age, studies in the elderly have shown that phosphatidylserine supplementation can improve both long-term and short-term memory, cognition and logical thinking.

However, these results do not seem to be consistently reproducible. Some studies show a significant benefit, and other studies demonstrate either limited benefit or no benefit whatsoever. The question is “why are these results so different?” The answer may be that those participants who respond poorly to stress may benefit the most from phosphatidylserine. A study inadvertently composed of participants who have a difficult time handling stress, may skew the results toward a positive outcome. In contrast, if the study is composed of individuals who handle stress more easily, the results would probably trend toward no benefit.

One recent German medical study looked at the effect of supplementation with phosphatidylserine on subgroups of participants undergoing a mentally stressful test. In this study, participants were divided into two basic groups, one group receiving phosphatidylserine and the other group receiving a placebo. The patients then underwent psychologically stressful testing. A number of psychological and physiological stress parameters were followed throughout the duration of the study. The results were then stratified into people who respond strongly to stress and those who don’t respond very strongly to stress.

The results were interesting. For individuals who do not respond very strongly to stress, phosphatidylserine supplementation did not seem to be of benefit. In contrast, individuals who responded strongly to stress, saw significantly reduced stress measures after taking phosphatidylserine. In this subgroup, phosphatidylserine was very beneficial.  Phosphatidylserine is derived from soy and is generally recognized as safe by the FDA. The best dietary sources of phosphatidylserine are in seafood rarely found in the American diet: mackerel, herring and eel. For those who are under chronic stress (and are feeling the effects), phosphatidylserine supplementation seems to be to be a reasonable option. During stressful times of the year, I use it myself.

Omega-3s and research from University of Guelph, Canada

Omega-3 has numerous benefits, and this article, sourced from Engredea News & Analysis (Feb, 2013), speaks to Omega-3s potential health benefits for breast health.

Feb. 25, 2013 University of Guelph | Engredea News & Analysis

A lifelong diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids can inhibit growth of breast cancer tumors by 30 percent, according to new research from the University of Guelph.

The study, published recently in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, is believed to be the first to provide unequivocal evidence that omega-3s reduce cancer risk.

“It’s a significant finding,” said David Ma, a professor in Guelph’s Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, and one of the study’s authors.

“We show that lifelong exposure to omega-3s has a beneficial role in disease prevention—in this case, breast cancer prevention. What’s important is that we have proven that omega-3s are the driving force and not something else.”

Breast cancer remains the most common form of cancer in women worldwide and is the second leading cause of female cancer deaths.

Advocates have long believed diet may significantly help in preventing cancer, but epidemiological and experimental studies to back up such claims have been lacking, and human studies have been inconsistent, Ma said.

“There are inherent challenges in conducting and measuring diet in such studies, and it has hindered our ability to firmly establish linkages between dietary nutrients and cancer risk,” he said. “So we’ve used modern genetic tools to address a classic nutritional question.”

For their study, the researchers created a novel transgenic mouse that both produces omega-3 fatty acids and develops aggressive mammary tumors. The team compared those animals to mice genetically engineered only to develop the same tumors.

“This model provides a purely genetic approach to investigate the effects of lifelong omega-3s exposure on breast cancer development,” Ma said. “To our knowledge, no such approach has been used previously to investigate the role of omega-3s and breast cancer.”

Mice producing omega-3s developed only two-thirds as many tumors—and tumors were also 30 percent smaller—as the control mice did.

“The difference can be solely attributed to the presence of omega-3s in the transgenic mice—that’s significant,” Ma said. “The fact that a food nutrient can have a significant effect on tumor development and growth is remarkable and has considerable implications in breast cancer prevention.”

Known as an expert on how fats influence health and disease, Ma hopes the study leads to more research on using diet to reduce cancer risk and on the benefits of healthy living.

“Prevention is an area of growing importance,” he said. “We are working to build a better planet, and that includes better lifestyle and diet. The long-term consequences of reducing disease incidence can have a tremendous effect on the health-care system.”

Can a Walk a Day, Keeps the Doctor Away?

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Everyone should drink 8 cups of water per day. These are just two examples of health advice which is well known, but walking daily is another important one. Doctors and other healthcare professionals would like people to exercise for at least an hour every day, but a fair amount of people do not adhere to their suggestion. If exercising seems like too much, at least try walking, because walking is more important than you might think.

One recent study tested a little more than 2,000 men from Hawaii with ages ranging from 71-93 for 7 years. The study found that those men who walked approximately a quarter mile per day were twice as likely to develop dementia as those who walked more than two miles per day. Just think, two miles per day can have an enormous effect on one’s mental health. The brain needs to be stimulated, and walking every day can give your mind time to think and become healthier. Not to mention, walking can help people lose weight or possibly prevent weight gain.

In another study, researchers followed about 19,000 women (ages 70-81) for nine years. This study discovered that women who walked or exercised for at least 1.5 hours, did better on tests which challenged their attention and memory skills. Conversely, women who walked less than 40 minutes a week showed a decline in these categories. Walking greatly benefits cognitive skills and helps people lessen their chances of having a mental fall off so to say. Just like keeping your mind active with reading or writing or some other form of brain exercise, physical exercise also does wonders for the mind.

Of course with exercising and walking daily, comes the possibility of pain and discomfort. These are two factors which deter a good amount of people from continuing their workout routine, but pain and discomfort are necessary for growth. Muscles become sore, only to become stronger, but sometimes bones and joints also develop ailments. Joint Decision could be a useful aid with walking daily, because Joint Decision might help keep you on your feet and on the go. Glucosamine is one of the main ingredients in Joint Decision and it can help with the repair and production of cartilage which is necessary for cushioning between joints to keep them feeling healthy and strong. Check out more about Joint Decision on our website (lifepriority.com) to see if it could be right for you in your workout and walking endeavors.

The most important thing is to stay active and exercise on a regular basis, preferably daily, but going to the gym or lifting weights may not be your thing, so try walking and listening to some of your favorite music while doing so. You could also think through difficult decisions or situations in your life while you’re walking the trail or the neighborhood. Walking can be extremely therapeutic and good for your overall health, so start walking today and see for yourself!

Life Priority: A Teacher’s Assistant To Help Eliminate Mental Fatigue

A teacher’s testimonial from valued Life Priority customer, Leigh Sanders. “I love teaching, and the best teacher’s aide I’ve ever had are my Life Priority Supplements.”

My husband and I have been using Life Priority supplements for over 10 years.  We were small business owners for 15 years and now Stan works as a consultant and I am an elementary school teacher, which is very exhausting.  Don’t believe it when your hear someone say teachers only work 8-4, 5 days a week, 9 months out of the year because they are very wrong!  Most of us put in anywhere from 50-60 hours per week August through May (not to mention the planning we do during the summer.)

I keep a mixture of LIFT and Muscle Memory at school and drink it Life Priority Lift Powderthroughout the day, especially when I need that afternoon pick-me-up and helps me eliminate my mental fatigue.  Instead of reaching for a soda or caffeinated beverage, I drink my LIFT/MM mixture or take the LIFT caps.

I play tennis, bike, and walk for exercise, so my other favorite supplement is the Joint Decision.  Joint Decision keeps my knees and neck more flexible.  Stan travels quite a bit so he keeps a bottle of the LIFT Caps in his brief case since those are easy to travel with.

Four years ago, my youngest son Austin broke his foot, which required a plate and six screws for it to heal properly.  I loaded him up on 3-Way Calcium and Joint Decision and he recovered well ahead of schedule.  He is currently a baseball player in college and uses LIFT, Muscle Memory, and Joint Decision to keep him focused and healthy.
